Personally, I believe that most NFL defenses use safeties that are interchangeable. There are very few teams that play a single high FS that is like a "center fielder" from when we were young. Because they are interchangeable, I am comfortable with what we have done. With that being said, now that we are a few seasons into the "YAC" rules -- I believe it is a worthwhile discussion -- should we only allow SS to play SS because STRAT rates them for the YAC defense? Alternatively, should we allow the FS to play SS at a reduced run defense rate. I don't think it is a "compelling reason" to change to 2 HBs. I think it would be far more realistic if they used the play side LB's rating for YAC. They are the ones that are matched up to the zone according to the game. SOM formations has the SS following the TE around then making the play across the field on a flat to the RB. I know this is already built in to the 7 roll on a flat but that is for coverage ability not ability to tackle in space.

My new position on all this debate is we should just use the rules Strat-O-Matic has set forth. The computer rules give you many options covering a plethera of situations to choose from without rewriting charts, adjusting player ratings, making up our own random charts etc.
If it's an optional rule in the game, we vote on whether to use it or not. Majority rules and we stop altering the game as we see fit because somebody perceives the game company rules as unrealistic or wrong. No more whining about how extra dice rolls, extra charts, extra this and extra that will lengthen our games. Most games run 2 hours on a regular basis now anyway, so if it's in the game, it's in the game.
