First off, I am hoping that Brent is just frustrated with the computer game and is blowing off steam. I would hate to see him leave the league because of it.
Second, with the 2019 cards coming out soon and all of us ordering cards in the next few weeks, we need to talk about what we are going to do next season. I am sure Brent does not want to hear this at this point and instead of Brian being the guy to say it (hopefully I am not speaking out of turn when I say that), I feel we need to plan on using the computer game during our 2020-21 season. Covid-19 is not going away and will probably be making a comeback in Illinois this fall and winter (the Spanish Flu in 1918 did not go away for 2-3 years). With Brent moving next year, Carl and Peter not in the area, and several of us in the high-risk age group for Covid-19, it seems to be the logical way for our league to go. I am hopeful that if we discuss rules to make the computer game easier and less frustrating to play, everyone will be on board.
Anyway, I at least wanted to get the conversation started. I personally enjoy the computer game and find that I now understand the game better than I did playing the board game. I hope there are others that agree.

I believe you are correct. That being said, if injuries and game lengths cannot be addressed, I am 95% certain that I will not play going forward. Two and a half hours per game and the litany of injuries are not acceptable (in the future) for me. No issues with finishing this season as-is.

I play in another league where me and Ryan share a team. Typical game time is 1.5-2 hours. Part of this is the learning curve. That being said, the extra half hour or so makes up for any travel time people have. Mark is probably the closet in proximity to John (Roselle) and i'm guessing it still takes him a half hour each way.
Injuries can easily be addressed by using the SOM advanced injury system should we need to still use the PC game. Buy I digress as that's a discussion for after this season.

Anthony -- regarding length of game. The typical FTF game lasts about 2 hours. My computer games have been near 3 hours. I agree it is too slow between plays and awaiting results. I believe this is related to the "animation" aspects of the game. I think all animation should be turned off. This is from NFLed, on the strat fan forum, in response to my similar query:
I believe that some settings promote synchronization problems during Netplay games, such that the frequency of disconnects and crashes may be increased. I recommend that all who use Netplay use the following settings in the options menu of the game, and in the leagues I am in we require some of these: * brief play-by-play = on (a very minor issue, probably not an issue at all) * No play animation = on (or set the "animation speed" at the bottom of the screen to the very fastest slider setting, although "no play animation = on" is safer) * auto save after each play = on (just good practice) * scroll play by play text output = off (very important) * do not allow animation replay = on (important or else it introduces a significant delay after each play for that team on offense) * do not play game sounds 3 settings = on (probably doesn't have any effect but if you don't care about sound then turn it off with these 3 options) * do not animate scoreboard = on (avoids delays when scoring) * use easy mode 2 settings = off (I have no idea the effect of easy mode on synchronization issues) * do not animate dice on card images = on (but if animating the dice on card images is important then leave it on) I don't know whether or not skins have an effect. Also, near the end of the half when the defense is being prompted to call a timeout or not, I recommend waiting a few seconds before clicking since clicking too quickly seems to cause issues. Fyi these are all just my opinion, I do not speak for Strat. I experience an occasional disconnect during Netplay but not frequently.

Anthony -- injuries.
The computer injury system we are using is harsh -- that's why we limit injuries to 'in game' injuries only. Personally, I'd rather have more frequent "game only" injuries rather than a smaller chance of "long term" injuries. Regardless, we can adjust the injury system for the computer game so that "durable" players are less likely to be injured. So there are options.

Losing Barkley, Njoku, Duane Brown, Milano (starting OLB), and Nix (starting BB) during a one possession game may cause you to change your mind. There was a point where I couldn't help but laugh. As for the time, I will change those settings for my next game.

"change my mind" -- Anthony, on August 16, 2006 the Jets traded its 1st round pick, its 3rd round pick, and Fred Taylor to the Jaguars for Thomas Jones who had an excellent card. The Jets were poised to return to the Super Bowl. On November 21, 2006, during the Jets Week 6 matchup with the Raiders, QB Peyton Manning was injured for SEASON! It is disheartening to know that you "championship" team cannot compete in November!
The following season in game against the Texans (December 26, 2007) Peyton Manning was injured for 6 games.
I have had plenty of players injured for the entire season (Rashean Mathis 6 CB injured in week 3 was notable.
In short, I'd gladly trade long term njuries for more in game injuries. Those ruin one game -- not the season.

It may be a little early, but I encourage everyone to purchase the computer game for next season with the cards. If we decide to block out the first 2 games of next season as computer game possible with similar rules as now (no long term injuries), that would get us to late October even if we start the season on time. We could reassess then. None of us has a crystal ball. As anxious as most of us are, getting back to face to face play should be done carefully.

Anthony and I played a game yesterday wherein we used all of NFLed's recommendations. To make these choices you go to "Options" and click the appropriate boxes. I have struggled with interminably long games -- especially the time from the play being called and the result being displayed. By eliminating all animation, the results were instant. Of course, I prefer face to face play, but the computer game is a solution if we simply learn how to play it. There are hundreds of leagues and these experienced leagues do not have the problems of which we complain (myself included). I simply believe it to be "user error" on our part.
By eliminating animation, you simply see the result of the dice roll and the cards. It takes a little of the "anticipation" out of it -- you don't get the "LONG GAIN;" shake the dice, wait for the result -- you get the result (and then you work your way backwards to determine how you received the result). I think if we try we can get through it and come out on the other end with a new appreciation for face to face play as well as the hospitality always afforded to us by Joann and John.
Here's hoping the new ratings come out this week!

I played the Seahawks against the Broncos yesterday. The game took one hour and 35 minutes. We had three re-starts. I truly believe removing the animation factors vastly improves the speed of the game. FTF is much more enjoyable. I consider the computer game (with animation off) to be a viable alternative when we cannot play FTF; we just need to learn how to play it quickly.

If you want to play a fast game play basic not advanced. The dice animation only slows the game down for 1-2 seconds a play. Pass rush animation slows it down a little longer. FTF is more enjoyable but there are very few willing to play that way currently.
Injuries are part of the game of football. If we used the injury system the game has players would be limited to how often they played or didn't play. Skill positions are based on attempts (Passing or Rushing) or receptions the rest are limited to a 3 game maximum if they are listed as the starter on their roster card.

Here's a question
Can one player play with all the animations and the opponent not?

Let's enjoy the game. We don't need to play "Evelyn Wood" style Strat-O-Matic Football. We will improve as we play more computer games. Both coaches should agree before the game how they want to play the game. Ryan and I discussed how we wanted to play our game last night before we actually played it. If Rich and Tony want to play a game in 1-1/2 hours, great. Others may not want to play that quickly. Please respect how others want to enjoy the SOM experience.
