53 players maximum. You must have the minimum players necessary to have a valid computer roster -- backups at all positions 3-4 / 4-3 and pro set will likely take care of it all. A player that is dual rated can count at any position group on your roster. A BB can be a RB or a TE.
The following are the maximum number of players at a position:
QB-4
RB-6
TE-4
WR-7
OL-12
DL-10
LB-10
DB-10
K+P-3
KR+PR-4
