For the 2020-2021 season we have several challenges. For me and some others getting through these challenges depends on what the 2021-2022 season will look like. At the center of this is the computer game. Opinions of the computer game have ranged from totally in favor of, to totally or near totally intolerable ( Brent & Peter K. ) For the 2020-2021 season Rich suggested to me that we do it in 4 game blocks. Games within each block could be played in any order to facilitate easier scheduling. You can’t begin the next block until you have completed the last block. Any unplayed games as of the first deadline of the fourth game can be played by other coaches. Games could be played for an owner before the deadline with the owner’s consent. This would necessitate continuing with the no multi game injuries rule we now have in place or something similar. Games could be played in the board game format if both players agree to. For the 2021-2022 season the computer game may still be an option ( we would have to figure out the injuries ) but anyone wanting to play all his games in the board game format should have the right to, barring another pandemic or rioting in the streets. Any new players should understand this. This is my opinion of a path forward and reason to suffer through dozens of computer games.

Agreed.
Here's the toughest question of them all? If one team wants to play face to face and the other owner doesn't, what do we do? I think you already know the answer, but i'm curious about your opinion on this and how it should be handled.

John jumped the gun on my thoughts, but I will put out what I had typed up:
The 2019-20 OFM Season will be completed via computer. We will play playoff games via computer and we will play the Super Bowl via computer because no Covid-19 change is in sight. We can easily finish the season and the playoffs within the next month, crown a champion (my prediction is the Rams or Titans), and get ready for next season.
The 2020-21 OFM Season will start via computer. It is my goal to play face to face (FTF) again. I envision a return to FTF play and some computer play in the future. I believe that the league will continue and strengthen if we focus on becoming a “Hybrid” League. In my view, the “Hybrid” League would allow for both FTF and computer play for all games.
I believe that most of us will continue to play FTF whenever possible. I will state the obvious; it is simply more enjoyable to play FTF: the anticipation of rolling the dice for results: Long Gains; turnovers; kick returns; punt returns; and even Field Goal attempts makes the FTF game “thrilling” -- even when the dice bounce out of Mark’s glass for the umpteenth time. You also get some social interaction with league members, a “night out” to talk about the unbelievable luck – good or bad – that you had or endured during your last game; discussing who will be drafted in the Top 10; criticizing someone’s bad draft choice and trumpeting your own 10th round steal; and ruminating about who will or won’t make the playoffs. All of this “banter” is lost when we only play the computer version. I am confident that as long as there is John and a “game room” that is often damp and cold and smoky – there will be FTF games. I have no worries that a “Hybrid” league will devolve into a computer only league. There has been plenty of time for the “pro-computer” campers to leave – they have not.
In my view the Hybrid League would work like this:
1. Our board game rules would mirror the computer game so that no team has an advantage/disadvantage playing via computer. For example, an ILB must be removed on nickel (not an OLB); the BB run block rating is in effect for end runs to the weak side; and a uniform injury system where injuries do not exceed the balance of the game must be implemented. There are likely others along with some roster requirements that we must address. 2. The league “schedule” would be released in four blocks of four games. You must play your four games before the deadline to move on to the next block. This will allow FTF play/double headers and general ease of scheduling. 3. There will be penalties for not playing in a timely fashion. When I first joined the league there were quite a few people that were ready to play your late game at a moment’s notice. You would be eliminated from playoff contention and draft picks would be lost. People rarely missed a game. Now it is routine. There have been recent posts about “respect.” I believe playing your games in a timely fashion, reaching out to your opponents in advance of deadlines, and informing the league of any issues that will cause delay is being respectful. We all have our own priorities, and we all know that family and work come first. However, if you dismiss the OFM League because it is “only a game” you are not being respectful of someone else’s time. Communication is key.
In order to move forward for next season we need to find more owners. Our league has had a perennial problem – finding owners for 24 teams in a FTF league. I applaud Brian D. for his efforts to hash out everyone’s thoughts for next season and to seek out new players. More on this to follow.

Regarding what trumps -- board game or computer game (presuming Covid is resolved) -- how about "reasonable under the circumstances." If for example, the guy from Madison, WI joins our league because he likes the idea of coming in a couple of times a year to play FTF, I don't think you can "force" him to play a Board game. In contrast, I don't think Mark should say I will NOT play any board games as long as I have the computer option. I think the chance of dispute is very low, and the likelihood that the league will grow stronger is great.

Between myself and Ryan we have three players to cover for the season ending dispersal of Ravens, Bears, Vikings and Saints players. All players live in the general area and this assumes computer play is an option. Ryan has at least one more potential player lined up who we know well and believe will fill a slot for one of the aforementioned teams or an additional team as needed should Chris decide to drop down to one team or we have to make a decision involving the Seahawks due to Alex's ongoing technical issues.
In my opinion, that's good for us before we consider randoms from anywhere.
At the conclusion of this season there is only one item with 100% certainty I will not be doing, hybrid league or PC version (This is for you Pat,LOL). I will not be playing any more phone games or be involved in proxy phone games with the PC version. I have always hated phone games and we really did that out of desperation to keep players who have moved to other states. Proxy version of the PC game just adds unnecessary delays while playing. Not acceptable as well. With the PC version as an option those methods of play are completely unnecessary moving forward. All remaining and new participants should be making arrangements to purchase the computer version of the game next season with cards. Make sure you have a computer that can properly handle the game and lastly check out your internet options if that's been creating a game play issue.

One last comment. I played Dave/Cowboys last night and feel the computer game has helped him understand the game better. I know it has helped me. So there is some good that the computer game has provided as well. Hybrid is definitely the way to go, even after the pandemic is over.

As for my status going forward: I am planning on finishing the season and coming back next season with both teams.
As for the rest of it - I want the league to move forward but that doesn't mean I want to be stuck staring at a screen instead of playing FTF. That being said I will still play the computer game but hope we can reach a compromise to still play FTF when the time is right or when people are ready.
Below is fluff:just wanted to put some words of feeling down.
This league when I started was more about playing the game to have fun, see people, talk, bitch, drink, eat, enjoy. Of course you want to win. I get we been more lax on things but dam this isn't suppose to be a job or work. And there is no need for us to start getting pissed at people because they don't want to conform. Maybe if we stopped forcing every decision and started having civil discussions then things would work out a little better. I get emotions get heated but let's relax a little. Everyone wants something from this league. We have to find a compromise. Let's just have a little understanding for people.
One positive thing I can say is at least those dice arnt getting beat up anymore. The poor dice have been thrown in the backyard to get hacked up by the lawnmower, been burned in the fireplace, swore at, screamed at, and even been thrown out of car windows on the way home from a terrible game.......ya I did that!

Chris on one hand you're absolutely correct that the game should be fun and quite honestly for me, winning is second to playing.
To address a few of your other items, Unfortunately we've actually gone beyond lax and that's become a huge problem. Over the last several seasons we've allowed players to pretty much do whatever they want whenever they see fit. No deadlines, no rules enforced and nearly all without penalty. You cannot continue to have that as it's not fair, bordering on rude to those who participate, play games on time, play by the rules set forth.
Its also not about conformity, it's about structure. Just like we all have in our homes and our jobs. We've lost our structure and quite honestly the Covid situation didn't create that. The Covid situation has brought it to a head. It should be considered a privilege to be in this league, or any league for that matter, not a right to do so just because you want to play. Other leagues that I have participated in (Baseball and Football) don't ask you what the holdup is in staying on time. You continue to fall behind, don't adhere to the rules etc, they don't vote you out, they just replace you. No questions asked. So in other words, Everybody has to make time to play their games in the time frame set forth no differently than you would a softball league, dart league, date night and more.
Lastly, I think everybody has been reasonably understandable to the point of the leagues potential demise. It doesn't matter what the reason is for constantly being behind, but it cannot continue to go on. We lost a long time owner (Rich L) in part because of this. We moved the start of the league back two weeks and that didn't help. There's long periods of dead time in communications despite the fact we have a website where information can be used to communicate daily. We allow owners to have 25% of their games played by somebody else without penalty, still behind. We allow games to be played well beyond the more than reasonable deadlines set forth for completion. We even used to allow extensions beyond those deadlines with approval. Now everybody just quietly says to themselves "f*** the approval" i'll play when I see fit. Don't they all know that everything else I have going on is more important than this. And if that's true, then it's time to move on and consider coming back when it's a better fit.
Just to be clear, this is not directed at you specifically just because you're behind now, this goes for everybody going forward regardless of their reasons whether it be with commitments to jobs, children, spouses, running a business, other hobbies etc.
I'm glad to hear you want to return with both teams next year and we can note that accordingly as the plans for next season continue to develop. I think that only leaves John in gray area (kind of), Carl P as he has not stated yet that he will buy the computer game for next season which is a must to continue the proper way and Alex being able to resolve his technical issues.
